Croatia's Hidden Treasures

WE'RE NOT GOING TO MENTION THE WORLD CUP
(whoops)

School's finally over (yay) and that means a holiday in the sunshine and me and the fam headed to Croatia (specifically the Northern city, Pula) for a relaxing week! This gorgeous country is most famous for it's beautiful coastline, hundreds of unique islands and varied beaches - but there are a few amazing things Croatia is less well-known for - so I thought I'd do you a favour and share some of Croatia's hidden treasures...

THE BEST-PRESERVED ROMAN RUINS OUTSIDE OF ITALY
I came to Croatia expecting hundreds of beaches and hotel resorts, but instead found restored Roman ruins just as immaculate as those found in Rome or Tuscany. The incredible Amphitheatre is smack in the heart of the city of Pula, which dominates the streetscape and doubles as the perfect venue for summer festivals and concerts (but we'll get onto those later.)
PULA FILM FESTIVAL

This turned out to be one of the most surreal experiences of my trip and something I'll never forget. On a warm Saturday evening, we arrived at the lit-up Roman Amphitheatre to watch the Croatian premiere for Mamma Mia 2. First off - MAMMA MIA 2 HAS TO BE ONE OF MY FAVOURITE FILMS EVER I LOVED IT and as it turns out, some of the cast and the director were there! It was amazing to watch the film on the big screen in the warm evening air and experience it with so many other people in such an incredible environment :)

THE BEACHES
Okay, so maybe this isn't a 'hidden treasure' because Croatia is pretty famous for its beaches. But when I picture a sunny country famous for its beaches, I don't imagine intimate little coves with small pebble beaches close to the warm, azure ocean. So I guess in a way the beaches of Croatia were a hidden treasure to me, as each little cove was unique and hidden from the next one!

ITALIAN CUISINE WITH A CROATIAN TWIST
Italian cuisine is surprisingly apparent in Pula: pizza, pasta and gelato are all staples and times it certainly felt like we were dining in a far-flung corner of Tuscany. The ice-cream was sooooo delicious and we ended up indulging in one every single day, exploring flavours from cranberry cheesecake to banana (melon was my favourite).

THE ATMOSPHERE
Despite being a bustling commercial city with busy streets of shops and tourists, Pula still manages to retain a friendly small-town appeal. It doesn't feel like you're walking around a European city, but instead a small French village on the coast filled with welcoming locals and gorgeous food :)

  2. Croatia is one of those places I feel is often forgotten about when it comes to travel destination. A lot of people tend to think of the Greek Islands, the South of Spain, France, or Positano in Italy. But never Croatia! I wonder why, and this post is proof that this is such a hidden gem that everyone should really be heading towards. In all honesty, I'm kind of glad that not a lot of people go, however, because that means that the city/country is still more local and has stayed true to it's culture without the masses of crowds and influx of tourists :) I'm glad you've had such a wonderful trip!

  5. Oww, nice post! The photos are amazing, thanks for sharing! I visited Croatia when I was little, but I wasn't very lucky that year (buckets and buckets of cold rain and fierce wind and a traumatizing pizza with ketchup). However I agree, Croatia is gorgeous and if I'll have again the chance to visit it, I definitely would!

  15. Your pictures are so lovely! I've never been to Croatia before... I love to travel though, so I'd never complain if I got to take a trip there!

I'm not a big fan of real Italian food. I like the Americanized kind better. I lived in Italy for three years, and I just couldn't get into pizza without pepperoni or pasta with clams (in their shells) in it. Maybe Croatian Italian food is different though.

Thanks for sharing! I love seeing other parts of the world!
