MY GUIDE TO MAINTAINING THAT SUMMER GLOW

The sun is shining and despite the humid nights and incredibly hot car seats, everyone just seems to be a little happier. One of my favourite things about summer is how much healthier I feel, my skin isn't dry from icy winds or unhealthy with a lack of colour - on the outside and the inside the long, summer days just make me feel so much happier. It doesn't matter if you're sitting on your balcony or back-garden, going for picnics with friends or soaking up the sun somewhere exotic - there are a few simple steps to help you maintain that summer glow throughout (and after) summer is over...



WATER
Beautiful Summer skin doesn't have to be all about body shimmer and expensive highlighters (although it never hurts to give them a try). It's about showing off a healthy complexion and feeling confident in your own skin that exudes a soft, natural glow. A key step to getting there is water. You've probably been told this a million times, but drinking large amounts of water every single day has incredibly positive effect on your body and even your mental health. For me, if my body is healthy it can help my mental health too.


SUN PROTECTION
I have to confess, wearing sun-cream on a daily basis during the summer months is never my top priority. Of course, if I plan on sitting in the sunshine all day, I'll make sure to keep my skin protected - but for day-trips with friends and family barbecues, I hardly put on any sun cream. And unsurprisingly, this is a huge mistake. The sun can be incredibly damaging for skin, regardless of colour or type, and this means that if you want to maintain a glow - you're going to need to protect your skin in the first place and keep it healthy. I'd recommend a moisturiser with SPF for the days when you won't be spending so long in the sun. 

SLEEP WELL AND DE-STRESS
I'll let you in on a little secret - drink lots of water, eat a balanced diet, get the right amount of sleep, exercise and take the time to look after your mental and physical health. That is virtually all you need to do for a happy, balanced life and to no surprise, are all factors in getting and maintaining sun-kissed skin. Especially getting enough sleep and de-stressing, if you're stressed and sleep-deprived your body will mentally and physically freak out and you will never achieve that glowing look you're searching for.


GENTLY CLEANSE
In the winter, we tend to use harsh products to scrub away dry skin, but in the summer is should be the opposite story. Gentle, water-based products with light formulas are the answer. Even if you have acne or especially oily skin, using lots of chemicals is going to drain your skin of its colour and any hope of accomplishing soft, luxurious skin for during and after summer.

FAKE IT 'TILL YOU MAKE IT
This summer, I'm hearing more and more about easy and inexpensive at-home fake-tanners that take a few minutes to use and will not only help to keep your beautiful summer skin but will even enhance it. As will all beauty products, some can cost as little as five pounds and more luxurious brands will cost thirty pounds - meaning there is a definite range for all budgets.

MAKEUP ESSENTIALS
I've said before that liquid highlighters and shimmer moisturisers aren't the answer to perfect summer skin, but honestly - these are the quickest and simplest shortcuts to the ultimate sun-kissed skin. I understand that wearing any makeup during the summer months is a no-no for most people, but a touch of shimmering highlight on top of a sparkling moisturiser of primer is never a bad idea. Just make sure to use a matte bronzer and wear clean eyebrows to finish off your look and not to look too much like a disco ball.

  1. These are all great tips and I do every one of them myself! Another that I would add is making sure that your diet consists of lots of fruits and veggies, nuts, and seeds. It's equally as important to take care of your body from the inside as it is the outside. I think that what you eat affecting more than just your physique is often forget because it can affect your skin, heart, mind, and whole body. But otherwise great tips!
