A Thousand Perfect Notes || Book Review

(all reviews are spoiler free :)
'You're worth so much more than a thousand perfect notes.'

I'M NOT OKAY AFTER READING THIS
My heart is broken into a thousand tiny pieces and I feel like my soul has been melted into adorable marshmallow fluff and turned to a sad mess of tears at the same time (do you see what a mess this book has left me in?) Trust me after finishing this book I was kinda emotionally stabbing my copy (sent as an ARC by the wonderful publishers thank you so much!) and asking why there wasn't any more pages. Then I came to the realisation I'd finished and I had to stare at a wall for a long time (well I was on a plane heading home from Italy so I stared at the back of an Easyjet seat.)

(Excuse the pun) but this book was so perfect. It was written in such a delicate and beautiful way I turned each page like it was made of the thinnest paper. Each page is a whole wave of new emotions, you're there in the moment, experiencing each moment with each character. You're walking down the street to Beck's house, you're sitting in the grimy classroom pretending to listen to bad teachers, you're playing the piano until your fingers bleed. It's just such a beautiful book and I'm going to say a million times during the review - just warning ya.

Beck is amazing and I want to hug him and cry with him all at the same time. He's so grumpy yet soft on the inside and so broken it's somehow terrifying and beautiful. I just want to sit him down with a good film, make him hot chocolate and wrap him up in a huge fluffy blanket so nothing can ever get to his strong, scarred soul. He just deserves everything and more.
In a strange-sort-of-way I also loved his mother. Yes, she's cruel, violent and terrifying, but behind all that you can see glimpses of fears, regrets and her own terror. In that way I wanted to bake her a cake (we learnt from this book that cake solves everything - no arguments there) and just HELP her. But then I also wanted her to just apologise to Beck and Joey and make them see how amazing and fabulous they are.
Then there was August. I was SO SCARED it was going to be the 'love interest saves main character from their terrible life' trope but I feel so stupid for thinking that. First off it's QUEEN CAIT, and I'm pretty sure she's some kind of wizard with magical powers. And I think within the first few pages of this book you get to understand that it's nothing like the usual contemporary style, therefore doesn't follow the usual tropes. I can only describe it as being similar to Jandy Nelson (hands down one of the best). Back to August. So I basically loved her and wanted to be best friends with her instantly. I was completely in awe of her personality and her style and her family and her huge heart. She's so vibrant and full of energy, every time she appeared I was instantly excited. Oh and she was believably quirky, nothing about her felt forced or convenient.
Also Joey (Beck's little sister) should be Queen Of The World because she's basically fabulous and sassy and wonderful. And I lav sibling stuff so much and sibling stories are always over looked!!

So yah basically I loved all of the characters SO MUCH (did you get that?)
However there was just not enough Beck and August - I'm sorry it was complete torture! Their relationship was small and intimate yet huge and colourful at the same time. I loved how it wasn't the usualy relationship you see in young adult books, it wasn't a passionate romance and the way they found each other wasn't dramatic, it was normal and honest. They're soooooo cute and the way they interact and talk to each other is just so sweet and honest and basically a reflection of the whole book :)
I also wanted to have wayyyy more Frey family scenes, that one scene was so much to read and I honestly felt like part of their wacky and fabulous family, but it was only one scene and I wanted to have vegan/veggie meals with them a hundred more times!

The way music is talked about in this book is soooooooo aaaargh. Like everything else in this book it's careful, beautiful and realistic. The way music is spoken about by ALL the characters, the way it breaks them down and fills their soul with colour - I couldn't agree more. I was reading every little word in awe, amazed at how beautifully the effect of music could be summed up, amazed at how such a huge thing could be broken down and exposed to such few lines that meant so much.

This book was a lot of emotions paired with music, cake and people who were good at their core, even if they didn't believe it.
I just want to stand on the top of a mountain and scream READ THIS BOOK DAMMIT
Oh and go read the interview I did with its author C.G. Drews before it got released:

  3. *flails in excitement* Ahhhh I can't wait to read this! I'm forcing myself to get through a few books that I really need to finish first and then reading this as a reward. :3 It sounds fantastic, and I may have totally snuck a teensy little peek at the first chapter, and it was so beautiful! Thanks for the review. :D

  4. I liked this book too! I was also impressed with how Cait avoided the 'love interest saves main character from their terrible life' trope. Beck saves himself, in the end, and August has her own life to live!

  17. Ah, this is such a lovely review! I hope Cait sees it because I can only imagine someone writing such a gorgeous review for a book that came out of my mind :) I agree with you about pretty much everything you said! This book was so intense but it never failed to pair the darkness with a bit of light and hope, and I think that's the part I loved best. Wouldn't a sequel about grown up Beck and August having adventures be the best? :)
