5 Staple Dresses You Need In Your Wardrobe

(did they ever really leave?)

I won't lie to you, I'm not the most trendy of people. Unfortunately, you won't often see my sporting the latest trends seen in fashion magazines and on Instagram because put simply, my bank account doesn't quite allow me to do that. But recently the trend of printed dresses (especially those with gorgeous and statement cuts) are everywhere. I like to think we're still being inspired by a young Donna from Mamma Mia 2 (I know I am), either way, I'm loving this trend and here are my favourite dresses of the moment. (Also dresses are fab because you don't actually have to match a top and bottoms together (thank God), you can just throw one on and practically be done! I don't know, maybe I'm just lazy like that haha.)

The Little Black Dress
The phrase 'little black dress' is so over-used it does make me cringe just a little bit, but like most I always see timeless Audrey Hepburn sipping a morning coffee in an especially glam black dress looking at the glittering jewels of the Tiffany's window display. Aside from this especially iconic image, a black dress (however 'little' you prefer it to be), is probably one of the most versatile pieces you can own. Pair it with virtually any shoe (blue high-top Chuck Taylor's are my favourite at the moment) and with any accessories you like (from neon earrings to a diamond-encrusted clutch), everything goes. These days, there are practically millions of black dresses floating around high streets and the good ol' internet, so have a browse and I'm sure you'll find one perfect for you.

The Midi Dress
Dresses are always seen as a classically 'feminine' item and can only be worn by the ultimate 'girly girls.' And surprise, surprise - this isn't right. Dresses can be bright pink and bodycon and can be paired with six-inch platform patent heels and huge hoop earrings (one of the many images of a 'feminine' woman we see) or can be dark and mysterious and worn with combat boots. A dress can be whatever you want it to be and one dress that is especially versatile in that way is the midi dress. Not too long, not too short, this style is just right for everyone (see what I did there?) and although usually appears in a 'tea dress' style can be seen in every style out there in every single fabric.

The Maxi Dress
In my head, Maxi dresses were always for middle-aged Mums on holiday with a fashionably dressed and glamorous children walking around the all-inclusive hotel's swimming pool at night after a sophisticated mocktail at the swanky restaurant (which of course has multiple pieces of abstract art scattered around inside, probably sculptures). Whenever I saw a maxi dress hanging on an unhealthy-thin mannequin (a rant for another day), I would always picture this glamorous Mum and wonder if I could ever wear a maxi dress like her. Oh, how times have changed. Maxi dresses (especially the floaty, printed type) are a massive trend at the moment and there are so many fab designs everywhere, I swear on the glam-Mum's life - there's one for you.

The Printed Dress
So maybe I'm pushing it with the word essential for this dress, but I just flippin' love printed dresses at the moment! Prints can be scary and loud and put a lot of people off, but (as Tan from Queer Eye has taught me) start yourself off with something simple like a stripe, a simple floral design or just something you try on and don't feel like a circus performer in.

The Wrap Dress
I would count this dress essential if you're up for following trends (again, another rant for another day). If not, again, maybe essential is pushing it a bit again. Even so, wrap dresses are GORGEOUS and I love them and I will always love them - so go take a sneaky peek at some, Nobody's Child has some lush ones in at the moment!

No, I don't have a wide-brim straw hat or chunky white trainers or a straw bag or even a seashell necklace (don't get me wrong I wish I did all of those trends are gorgeous), but I have got some pretty fab dresses, if I do say so myself.  What do you think of the dress trend? What's your favourite piece of the moment? x

Thank you Nobody's Child for sending me these gorgeous pieces (they'll be cropping up in posts for a while!)
